Overview

The Luminos PIC Heat Exchanger provides passive water cooling for active PIC Chips and other Planar Devices. The PIC Heat Exchanger mounts directly under a compatible Luminos Vacuum Part Holder, for precise and highly effective local heat removal. The PIC Heat Exchanger thermally anchors an active PIC Chip to the surrounding ambient temperature and removes heat that would otherwise be coupled into the adjacent components. The PIC Heat Exchanger significantly reduces mechanical and optical drift and improves the stabilization time of an alignment system that is reacting to changing heat loads from an active PIC chip. The water temperature coefficient in the passive reservoir is 0.2 C° per Watt. The PIC Heat Exchanger incorporates dual symmetric flow channels specifically designed to minimize and balance unwanted thermal expansion and simultaneously eliminates any water turbulence that might limit nanometer level precision alignment stability. 

The PIC Heat Exchanger includes:

  • Precision machined heat exchanger block 

  • Sealed magnetically coupled pump 

  • Water reservoir and all hoses, fittings and accessories 

  • A spacer plate that can be removed to install the optional Temperature Control Kit


The optional Luminos Temperature Control Kit enables closed loop temperature control of active and passive PIC Chips and other Planar Devices. The Temperature Controller operates a thermoelectric cooler for heating or cooling, with a precision NTC Thermistor sensor mounted to a Luminos Vacuum Part Holder, to set specific temperature for the substrate mount under varying heat loads within a defined operating temperature range.  Luminos designs and manufactures custom Vacuum Part Holders for use with Luminos PIC Alignment Systems and the PIC Heat Exchanger.
